Katsumi Tamura, the art director and designer behind this innovative project, collaborated with designer Takahiro Sugawara to bring "Town" to life. The calendar, which measures 210mm x 297mm, was launched in July 2012. It stands as a testament to Tamura's belief in the transformative power of quality design, embodying his concept of "Life with Design".
What sets "Town" apart from conventional calendars is its interactive nature. Users can assemble and fit parts fashioned into buildings, along with various accessory parts, creating their own little town as the months pass by. This offers a unique, engaging experience, transforming the simple act of marking time into a creative process.
Each component of the "Town" calendar is carefully designed to offer the comfort of seeing, holding, and using. The design is imbued with lightness and an element of surprise, enriching the user's space and providing a daily dose of creativity and innovation.
The uniqueness and originality of "Town" have not gone unnoticed in the design world. In 2013, it was awarded the Platinum A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication category. This prestigious award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that showcase unmatched professionalism, contribute to societal wellbeing, and advance the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology.
With "Town", Katsumi Tamura has demonstrated that even the most mundane objects can be transformed into interactive works of art. His design philosophy, which emphasizes the power of design to modify space and transform the minds of its users, is clearly reflected in this innovative calendar.
